Liège Airport and Protection UNIT are delighted to announce the launch of their brand new means of transport, the electric bicycle, which will be used to carry out security patrols on the site.
Aware of the importance of guaranteeing the safety of its passengers, staff and facilities, Liège Airport and Protection UNIT have invested in this environmentally-friendly and efficient mobility solution.
The electric bicycle will enable airport security officers to patrol the site quickly and efficiently, ensuring a stronger presence and an immediate response if needed.
Equipped with silent, environmentally-friendly electric propulsion, the electric bike will enable airport security officers to move around smoothly and discreetly, without disrupting airport operations or causing noise or air pollution. This contributes to Liège Airport’s overall vision of sustainable development and environmental responsibility.
Thanks to their agility, airport security officers will be able to access larger areas of the airport with ease. The electric bike will give them better visibility and greater mobility to quickly detect suspicious situations, deter malicious acts and ensure travellers’ peace of mind. By choosing to invest in this innovative means of transport, Liege Airport and Protection UNIT are reaffirming their commitment to the safety of its passengers and partners, while contributing to the transition towards more sustainable mobility.
« Our initial goal was clear: how could we, as the Liege Airport subsidiary responsible for airport security, contribute to the environmental objectives set by Liege Airport? The first step was taken in 2022 with the replacement of the majority of our combustion-powered service vehicles with hybrid and 100% electric vehicles. However, in collaboration with Protection UNIT, we wanted to take our thinking one step further. So we opted to introduce cycle patrols (replacing quad patrols). These provide real added value in terms of security, particularly through the different perspective they offer, while generating a motivating working environment for the officers. »
Pierre VANBELLINGEN
AIRPORT SECURITY MANAGER & TECHNICAL INFRASTRUCTURE MANAGER
« Cycling is an increasingly attractive option for site workers. Already operational for a year along the northern bypass, the cycle-pedestrian loop is due to be completed shortly. Between now and the end of the year, we will also be installing secure cycle parking facilities at several strategic locations on the site. ».
Bernard VONÊCHE
STRATEGIC ACCESSIBILITY MANAGER
« Protection UNIT has been part of this ecological movement for several years now. Just like the use of horses at festivals or at the Belgian Formula 1 Grand Prix, these new electric bikes will replace all the quads that can be used for certain rounds. It’s more ecological and ultimately more practical most of the time. »
